Safe packaging and import checks

Sharp tool ocean-freight packingJapanese knives are sharp tools and should be packed with sheath, cardboard blade cover, bubble wrap, foam protection, double-wall carton, and Sharp Tools / Fragile labels.

A knife intended for kitchen use is not necessarily free from controls; it still has to be assessed based on its actual shape, construction, intended use and announcements by the competent authorities. Before ordering, give the actual carrier complete product photos, the blade type, dimensions and intended use for confirmation, and if the classification is in doubt, consult the police and customs first.

Official verification sources

Knife controls and customs tariff classification are two separate levels that must each be checked; the final classification of the goods is determined by the competent authorities and the customs at the place of import.

8. FAQ

Which brand should I choose: Shun, Misono, Tojiro, or Global?
Choose Tojiro DP for value, Shun Classic or Misono UX10 for serious home cooking, Global for easy-clean stainless design, and Aritsugu or KIYA for artisan work.
How do I choose gyuto, santoku, deba, or yanagiba?
A 21cm gyuto is the best first knife. Santoku is shorter and lighter, deba is for fish, and yanagiba is for sashimi.
What is the difference between VG-10, VG-MAX, Blue #2, and White #2?
VG-10 and VG-MAX are easy-maintenance stainless steels. Blue #2 and White #2 are sharper carbon steels that need drying and oiling.
Is ocean freight safe for Japanese kitchen knives?
Sea shipping is generally fine as long as the sheath, cardboard cover, bubble wrap, shock-absorbing foam, and labeled outer carton are all in place. For high-value knives, choose a trackable shipping method, and check carbon-steel blades for rust protection upon arrival.
